LEGAL SEO

SEO for Law Firms
That Brings In Cases,
Not Just Traffic.

Most law firm SEO produces rankings and traffic reports. What it rarely produces is a measurable increase in signed cases. I build legal SEO around client acquisition, not vanity metrics, covering technical SEO, local map pack visibility, practice area content, and AI search citation.

I have been doing SEO for law firms and attorneys as a solo consultant for over seven years. Legal search has a specific competitive landscape, specific content quality requirements, and a specific client acquisition pattern that differs from other industries. What works in e-commerce SEO or SaaS SEO does not map onto legal search without significant adaptation. This page covers the full scope of what legal SEO involves, why it frequently underperforms, and what a correctly structured engagement looks like from start to first case inquiry.

Why is my law firm's SEO not generating case inquiries?

The most common reason law firm SEO fails to produce case inquiries is that it was designed to produce rankings, not clients. These are related but not the same objective. A ranking on page two produces almost no traffic. A ranking on page one for a query with no transactional intent produces traffic but no inquiries. Traffic from a practice area page that loads slowly on mobile, buries the phone number, and leads with a generic "our team" paragraph converts at a fraction of what it should.
The failure cascade in legal SEO usually runs like this: a generalist agency builds a technically adequate site, produces some blog content targeting informational queries, reports traffic growth, and declares success. The firm sees no meaningful change in phone inquiries because the content that was built targets queries made by people researching legal topics, not by people who need a lawyer right now. The practice area pages that capture transactional queries are thin, generic, and outranked by competitors who have invested in page depth. Fixing this requires a clear audit of which pages have ranking potential, which have conversion problems, and which are missing entirely.

How do potential clients actually search for a lawyer?

Legal search behavior varies significantly by practice area, and understanding the difference is the foundation of attorney SEO services that produce results. A personal injury client searches after an event that just happened. They are emotional, on their phone, and often searching within hours of the incident. A family law client searches over weeks or months while making an enormous life decision. A criminal defense client is often searching within hours of arrest, on mobile, frequently at night or on weekends.
Each of these patterns has different SEO requirements. The criminal defense client needs a page that loads in under two seconds on mobile with a phone number visible above the fold and content that addresses the immediate situation directly. The family law client needs content depth that builds trust across a long research period. The personal injury client benefits from both urgency signals and substantial content about the legal process. Search engine optimization for lawyers that does not distinguish between these patterns produces pages that serve none of these clients well.

What technical SEO issues are most common on law firm websites?

Technical SEO problems on law firm websites cluster around three areas. The first is page speed: most attorney websites are built on generic themes that were not optimized for Core Web Vitals performance. Largest Contentful Paint above 4 seconds and poor Cumulative Layout Shift scores are endemic across the category. Legal search traffic is heavily mobile, and mobile page speed is a direct ranking factor. A site that loads in 4 seconds on mobile is losing clients to competitors that load in 1.5 seconds regardless of how strong the content is.
The second area is schema markup. Legal websites should carry Service schema, LegalService as a LocalBusiness type, FAQPage schema on practice area FAQ sections, Speakable schema on introductory content targeted for AI citation, and BreadcrumbList schema on every page. Most law firm sites have no schema at all, or only a basic Organization schema added by their theme. The third area is indexation: duplicate content from similar practice area pages, canonical tag errors, and pages blocked by robots.txt directives are all common problems that suppress rankings for pages that could otherwise compete. If you want to know exactly which of these issues your site has, a law firm SEO audit identifies them with a prioritized action plan.

How does the Google map pack affect law firm client acquisition?

For city-level legal searches, the Google map pack appears above all organic results on both desktop and mobile. The three firms shown in the map pack receive substantially more clicks than organic results for local legal searches. A firm that ranks well organically but does not appear in the map pack is invisible to a large portion of the search audience for its own market.
Map pack rankings are driven by different factors than organic rankings. The primary inputs are Google Business Profile completeness and relevance, citation consistency across legal directories and general citation sources, review volume and recency, and proximity to the searcher. A firm with a 20-page website and a perfectly maintained GBP will often outrank a firm with a 200-page website and a neglected GBP for local searches. Local SEO for attorneys requires dedicated work on the GBP, citation building across Avvo, Martindale, FindLaw, Justia, and dozens of additional directories, and a review acquisition strategy where clients are asked to leave specific, practice-area-relevant reviews. See the dedicated page on local search optimization for law firms for the full map pack strategy.

Why do practice area pages carry the rankings in legal search?

Practice area pages are the primary ranking asset in legal SEO. A dedicated page for each practice area the firm handles allows each page to target a specific cluster of queries with full relevance. A page devoted entirely to criminal defense in Cook County, covering the specific courts, the charge categories the firm handles, and the defense process in Illinois, will outrank a general firm page for every specific criminal defense query in that market. This is not a theory. It is the consistent pattern across every competitive legal market in the US.
Each practice area also has sub-categories worth their own pages. Criminal defense has DUI, drug charges, domestic violence, federal crimes, and white-collar offenses. Family law has divorce, custody, child support, spousal support, and property division. Immigration has visa categories, deportation defense, and DACA. Each sub-category is a separate search cluster with its own queries, its own searcher intent, and its own competitive set. The following practice area pages cover the specific SEO requirements for each:

How do I get my law firm cited in ChatGPT and AI search results?

AI search systems including Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Claude are increasingly answering legal questions directly. When someone asks "how much is my car accident case worth in Texas" or "what should I do if accused of DUI in Illinois," the AI system generates a response and cites its sources. Those cited sources get branded exposure to every person who reads the answer. A law firm whose content is cited in those answers is building recognition at the top of the research funnel without advertising spend.
Getting cited requires specific structural changes to how content is written and marked up. Speakable schema tells AI systems which passages are high-quality extracts. FAQPage schema on practice area FAQ sections provides pre-formatted question-and-answer content that AI systems can cite directly. Content written in self-contained 150 to 300 word passages that each answer a specific question performs better for AI citation than content written as long narrative prose. Named attorney authorship and accurate, jurisdiction-specific legal information are E-E-A-T signals that AI systems use to assess source credibility. These changes improve both traditional search rankings and AI citation simultaneously because the structural clarity that AI systems require is also what improves relevance signals for traditional ranking algorithms.

Which US cities and states do you provide legal SEO services in?

I work with law firms across the United States as a remote consultant. The engagement is the same regardless of geography. What varies is the competitive context, the local search landscape, and the specific state law that should be referenced in practice area content. I have built out detailed market analysis for the four states with the highest concentration of existing law firm SEO engagements:

Houston • Dallas • Austin

Law Firm SEO in Texas

Harris County courts, the Port of Houston maritime market, Spanish-language search across 44% of Houston, and the DFW and Austin competitive landscapes.

Atlanta • Fulton • DeKalb

Law Firm SEO in Georgia

The Atlanta PI market saturation, Fulton and DeKalb court geography, and targeting the satellite cities that dominate growth search volume.

View state page →

Chicago • Cook County

Law Firm SEO in Illinois

Cook County's 2.5 million annual cases, the Daley Center, 26th and California, and competing across Chicago's 77 neighborhoods.

Miami • Miami-Dade • Tri-County

Law Firm SEO in Florida

Miami-Dade's 70% Hispanic population, Spanish as the dominant search language for immigration and PI, and the bilingual GBP and hreflang strategy that produces map pack visibility.

For firms in other states, the engagement starts with market research specific to the city and practice area, including the dominant ranking competitors, the realistic timeline and content investment to compete, and the local search landscape for the primary queries.

What does a legal SEO engagement actually look like?

Every engagement starts with a diagnostic. Before any work begins, I audit the current site for technical issues, on-page gaps, local SEO status, schema coverage, and the content gaps between the firm's current page set and the queries its competitors are capturing. The diagnostic produces a prioritized action plan that separates quick technical wins from strategic content gaps. This audit also establishes the baseline from which all future results are measured.
From there, the engagement covers the specific issues the audit identifies: technical fixes implemented in the first 30 days, practice area page builds or improvements targeting the highest-value query gaps, Google Business Profile and citation work for local search, schema implementation across all relevant pages, and ongoing content production at a pace calibrated to the competitive requirements of the market. Reporting is monthly. Each report includes ranking changes for specific pages and queries, organic traffic changes, and attribution of organic traffic to client inquiry volume where tracking allows. Direct access to me by email and scheduled calls. No account managers, no junior staff layer. I do the work.
For firms that want to understand the specific issues before committing to an ongoing engagement, a standalone audit is the right first step. For firms comparing the solo consulting model to an agency structure, the comparison between a legal SEO agency and a solo consultant covers the real trade-offs in detail. For firms who want to understand what separates a genuine specialist from a generalist claiming expertise, the criteria for evaluating a lawyer SEO expert provides the specific questions worth asking before signing anything.

FAQ

Initial movement on less competitive terms, such as niche practice area queries in mid-size cities, is visible within 60 to 90 days from a technically sound starting point. Primary competitive terms, such as "personal injury attorney Houston" or "criminal defense lawyer Chicago," require sustained work over six to twelve months before page-one visibility is consistent. The timeline depends on the starting point: a firm with no existing SEO foundation takes longer than one with an indexed, technically clean site. Map pack rankings often move faster than organic rankings because local signals respond to GBP and citation work more quickly than organic rankings respond to content. The realistic expectation is that organic search is a compounding channel, not an immediate one. The firms that achieve strong organic visibility have typically maintained a consistent content and technical program for at least a year.
Reviews affect map pack rankings more than they affect organic page rankings. If your firm is on page two or three for organic searches, the most common causes are: practice area pages that are too thin to compete with the content depth of page-one competitors; technical issues including slow page speed, crawl errors, or missing schema markup; a domain authority level that is lower than the sites currently ranking above you; or content that does not fully address the search intent for the query. Reviews are a local SEO factor and do not directly move organic rankings. Diagnosing which of these is the primary constraint requires a site audit, not a single answer. The most common case is thin practice area pages: a firm with a single "Practice Areas" page listing ten areas of law will almost always lose to a competitor with dedicated, thorough pages for each area.
Separate pages for each practice area consistently outrank consolidated pages in legal search. The reason is relevance: a page dedicated entirely to DUI defense in Illinois, covering the implied consent law, the statutory summary suspension, and the specific courts in Cook County, will be scored as more relevant for "DUI lawyer Chicago" than a page that lists DUI as one of ten practice areas in a paragraph. Search algorithms evaluate topical relevance at the page level. A personal injury page that covers car accidents, truck accidents, slip and fall, and wrongful death in depth will rank better for each of those sub-queries than a single page that names all four in one sentence. The content investment required to build out separate, thorough pages for each practice area is the single most impactful organic search investment most law firms can make.
Legal SEO requires knowledge that general SEO practice does not develop. Google applies elevated E-E-A-T evaluation standards to legal content as a YMYL category: the accuracy, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness of legal content are assessed more strictly than for most business categories. Schema markup for law firm websites is more specific than standard business schema: Service, LegalService, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Speakable, and BreadcrumbList are all relevant and implemented differently for legal content. The competitive landscape in legal search is also distinct: aggregator sites including FindLaw, Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, and Justia hold strong positions for many high-value legal search terms, and understanding where those positions are beatable versus where a different strategy is needed requires market knowledge that generalist SEO practice does not produce.
Both channels serve different parts of the client acquisition funnel and they compound differently over time. Google Ads produces immediate visibility for purchase-intent queries but stops producing results the day the budget stops. Organic SEO takes longer to build but produces compounding returns: a page-one organic ranking continues generating inquiries without ongoing spend once it is achieved. Legal Google Ads is also one of the most expensive paid search categories in the US: cost per click for competitive personal injury and criminal defense terms routinely exceeds $50 to $150 per click in major metros. A firm that builds strong organic visibility reduces its dependence on paid search and lowers its blended cost per inquiry over time. The firms with the strongest economics in legal client acquisition typically use paid search for immediate volume while building organic visibility as a long-term compounding asset.
AI search systems including Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT now answer legal questions directly and cite their sources. When someone asks "what should I do after a car accident in Texas," the AI response names sources and those firms get branded exposure to every person who reads the answer, regardless of whether they click through. A law firm whose content is cited in AI search results is present at the top of the research funnel. The structural requirements for AI citation differ from traditional ranking factors: Speakable schema, self-contained FAQ answers, named attorney authorship, and factual accuracy at a level that earns citation from systems trained to prefer authoritative sources. Law firm SEO that does not build for AI citation is leaving a growing client acquisition channel unoptimized.
